Erec's Restaurant

Kristen stepped into the kitchen to find Ainsley alone, cleaning up the kitchen. The paused, not sure what to say to him. Ainsley turned around as he cleaned a glass with a rag and spotted her.

"Oh! Hey, Kristen. Thanks for coming back. I just want to apologize for dissing your..." he coughed into his fist, "Er... fandom. I mean, you suffered through Aaron and my Artemis Fowl discussion without a word so... I was wrong to insult yours. I just kinda thought we were debating. I like to debate with people I'm comfortable with."

Kristen gave a start. He'd just said two things she didn't expect: 1) he apologized and 2) he felt comfortable with her.

"Um... it's okay," Kristen muttered, "I mean, I really didn't mind you are Aaron talking about it. I'd just never heard of it."

Ainsley nodded. "And I didn't exactly 'hate' Twilight. I just didn't 'like' it."

Coming to some sort of awkward understanding over something so unimportant, Kristen sat back down at the table and glanced into Ainsley's bag. Books, books, books, books...

"AINSLEY! KRISTEN!" Aaron burst into the room, making Ainsley jump and drop the glass, which shattered on the tiles.

"What's wrong?! Who died?! Who's after us?!"

Aaron shook his head. "Nothing, nothing, oh don't bother with that, we're leaving!" Aaron said as Ainsley bent down to pick up the broken glass, "I found five bicycles in the garage. We've got transportation!"

Ainsley grinned. "Oh thank God! I'm tiered of walking!" His hand briefly scratched at were the bandages still were under his shirt. The would was no longer critical, but it would still be another day or two before he took it off. Aaron winced but continued on his excited explanation.

"We'll get to Aorth a lot faster with the bicycles. We just got to get some air in the tiers."

"Ah~ I bet sis'll be happy to see us," Ainsley said, "You'll finally be able to get some rest, Aaron, after sis deems you worthy. Which she will; you're cool."

Aaron laughed. Kristen asked "What about you, ainsley?"

Ainsley shook his head. "My work starts when we get to Myranda's. I'll probably be stuck with baby duty."

The room paused as ainsley rearranged his books.

"...Baby?" Aaron aked.

Ainsley nodded. "Myranda has a baby son, Chris. My nephew."

"Your sister's married? I thought you said she didn't trust people easy...."

ainsley shrugged. "Nope. Not married."

The room was quiet. Ainsley didn't seem to realize the connotations his sentence caused, innocently trying to zip up his suitcase. Aaron coughed into his fist.

"Um... your sister...?"

Aaron looked up, paused, and then gasped. Then he laughed and shook his head.

"No, no, no! He's adopted."

Kristen let out a sigh and Aaron calmed down. He was getting tiered of Ainsley's family giving him a heart attack.

"Alright, I think that's everything," Ainsley said, swinging his backpack onto his shoulders, "Let's get those bicycles working..."

Aaron's POV

Kristen's jaw locked "Yeah." she answered quickly, she got up from the table and let the room. When she was out of earshot I rolled my eyes "Well that's a good way to start a friendship!" I said sarcastically
"What?!" Ainsley said defensively



"If someone says that they like something and seem enthusiastic about it, you don't just bash it!"



"We were having a healthy debate!" Ainsley did not see what he had done wrong
"Yeah, she put up with your ranting about Artemis Fowl!" I pointed out
recognition click on Ainsley's face

"Oooh..."
"Yeah!"

Kristen's POV

I closed the bathroom door and leaned on the sink with my back facing the mirror.



I wasn't 'Up Set' at Ainsley, like 'go cry in my room' up set, I was more Angry... It was stupid but small things like people picking on my fandom’s irked me. My mother always blamed my dad for passing down his anger but that was a lie, my dad had never once gotten angry... besides I had more of her in me than him... The anger was why I had gotten kicked out of the first school, which was right after my dad had died, but after that I had gotten it under control. I had gotten really comfortable at the second school and then my mom would look for some stupid reason to pull me out, that went on for four more schools. Then we moved and she had decided to send me to Upity... I didn't want Aaron or Ainsley to know about why I had changed schools the first time.
When I got control of myself I left the bathroom and went back down stairs...

Aaron's POV

I had left Ainsley to think about what I had said. I had wanted to check out the garage before we left to see if there was anything we could use, so I set off into the garage with my bag over my shoulder. It was a large garage (do they have cars in the Kingdom Of Keepers?) with little left inside it, but I savaged the shelves and found some rope, a hammer, and a key to something.



I put the rope and hammer in my bag then looked around the garage to see if anything was locked up. In the corner of the garage something was covered in an old white bed sheet, I walked up an pulled the sheet off, underneath were five bicycles locked together. I squished the tires to see if they were full, which of course they weren't, a simple spell could take care of that, and then I unlocked the bike chain with the key. I ran back in to tell Ainsley and Kristen of my great find...

Ainsley lifted an eyebrow. "I meant it was good as in it collected an insanely large fan-base despite a lack in basic plot and character development. That's impressive, despite the mediocre writing."

Kristen pouted and the smile dropped off Aaron's face.

"It's not mediocre."

Ainsley shrugged. "I lost interest in the plot have way through. I was about to put it down when the action picked up three fourths of the way into the book. I just liked the side characters better than the main ones."

Kristen's jaw dropped. "How can you not like Edward and Bella?"

Ainsley made a face. "Edward blatantly stalks her and Bella's an idiot? Trust me, I would have liked it better if, say, Alice was the main character. Or Charsile. Or Jacob."

"Jacob was a prick!"

"In a later book. It was a classic case of character derailment. He was too much of a likable character; he was taking the attention away from the main couple. So... his personality was mega altered."

"Oooookay!" Aaron put in, trying to quickly change the subject before his best efforts of trying to hook Ainsley up with a girl died in a fiery crash, "Kristen! Do you have everything?"

I'm sorry if you like Twilight, but I can't see someone like Ainsley liking it all that much. He's too well read and, like me, was probably comparing it to other vampire books as he read. Quite frankly, Edward Cullen's design might as well have been stolen from Armand from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and there are several other plot points that made it feel like a rip off. But in VC the characters can do horribly bad things and you still like them... Twilight can't quite pull that off.... In fact I was praying Bella would die in a fiery crash... no such luck...

Kristen's POV

"He has a point though," I teased Aaron "If Holly and Art hit it off-" Aaron cut me off
"She' 80!" he burst out "Well Edward's 109, and he and Bella were perfect!"
"You read Twilight?" Ainsley stuck his head out of the door way of a bedroom
I bit my lip and started snapping the rubber band on my wrist "Normally I would read something like that but a guy recommended it to me!" I said defensively, Aaron smirked
"That’s actually something I’ve been wanting to read..." he blushed, Ainsley came in with his bag stuffed so much that it looked like it would pop. "I thought it was good." he said, I looked at him pleasantly surprised.
"I found it interesting because it was written from a loser of magic's point of view, and even though there was no magic. I still loved the plot and adventure of it all." I told Ainsley, Aaron crossed his arms contently and leaned back in his chair.

Ainsley seemed to be trying to get as many books into his bag as possible while Aaron made breakfast. And, by breakfast, Kristen meant the cereal in the cabinet.

"Hey, did you see were I put down the Opal Deception?" Ainsley asked. (forgive the many Artemis Fowl references to come. I'm really physiced about 7th book coming out, and I wanted them to talk about books some so!)

Aaron grabbed a red book from the counter.



"This one?" Aaron asked. Ainsley smiled and took it, shoving the book lovingly into his bag.

He looked up and smiled at Kristen. A red blush danced across her cheeks.

"You read Artemis Fowl?"

She shook her head and sat down, waiting for Aaron to serve her. "No. What's it about?"

"Uh..." Ainsley looked up at the ceiling, looking for the words, "A genius boy discovers the fairy people; hilarity and kayos ensues."

Kristen nodded. "Who's the bad guy?"

Ainsley shrugged. "Changes almost every book. Artemis was actually technically the bad guy in the first one. Opal seems to be the bad guy in all the odd numbered books...."

"I'm getting tiered of her," Aaron said, putting a bowl of cereal in-front of Kristen and motioning for Ainsley to sit down.

Ainsley did so and received a bowl of cereal. "Everyone is. And the author knows it. He's probably going to stop using her after this whole time traveling this blows over."

"I'd like Minerva to come back."

"Oh, don't start that again!" Ainsley rolled his eyes, "Minerva's not coming back! No one likes her."

"She was an okay character. And Artemis liked her," Aaron winked.

"Ugh! Minerva was just to show us Artemis hit puberty finally. She's too much like Artemis to be a love interest; I told you."

Aaron pouted. "So who would it be?"

"Holly, duh."

Aaron crossed his arms. "He's fourteen. She's eighty years old!"

"She's a fairy."

"Why are you so insistent on that couple?"

"They just click! It's hard to say without going through the books and pointing out every single little hint. But it's from book one, even though I only realized that after a re-reading. It's subtle."

"Oh, there's nothing 'supporting' it."

"Have you read sixth book?"

Kristen watched the banter as they continued on and on. She had never seen Ainsley so animate, so alive, like when he talked books. Eventually Ainsley cornered Aaron to a point were the blond could no longer come up with an argument, and Aaron threw in the towel.

"I'll think of a counter point later..." he grumbled as Ainsley did an obnoxious superiority dance.

"i'm going to check the bedrooms for anything we might need."

The green-eyed boy disappeared into the next room. Kristen turned to Aaron.

"I didn't expect I'd ever see two boys talking who's dating who."

Aaron shrugged. "It's the only way I can get him talking about a normal couple with any type of enthusiasm."

And yes, the ArtyXHolly fans WILL corner ArtyXMinerva fans with their logic. It may very well be twisted logic, but ArtemisXHolly just has the livelier fanbase.

Ainsley handed me back the photo then turned to leave,
"He looks like my dad more then me." I don't know why I said that but I did
Ainsley turned "What?" he asked
"Matt, my brother," I missed saying that 'my brother' "He looks like my dad. The picture doesn't really do him any justice though." I smiled
"I know what it's like not to have a father." he replied
"Yeah, but your mom likes you for who you are." I ran my hand through my hair, and tried not to show how I felt. I faked a smile and said "Ill be down in a minute." I grabbed my backpack, which was already packed and pretended to rearrange my things inside it. Ainsley put his hand on my shoulder, this took me off guard, I thought he had left but he had knelt down on the floor next to me, his eyes searching my face.
"Are you alright?" he asked
"Yeah." I lied; I didn't realize how much I had missed Matt.



I stood up abruptly "Um, I’ll be down in a minute."
He patted my shoulder kindly and went down stairs.
I let out a large breath. Get a hold of yourself. I told myself. I pushed my emotions back for the moment and went down stairs to eat...

(I'm not sure why... but this is in Ainsley's POV. O.o I just started typing it like that...)

Why did she yell at me like that? Yeah, I kinda snapped at her, but she wasn't answering my question! I stared at the picture, judging it. He didn't look a thing like Kristen. She was blond, small, cherubic, and pretty. He... wasn't. He was dark-haired, tall (by the looks of it), angular, and... well... not the most handsome man in the world. No, Aaron had this guy beat by a hundred miles.

I cocked my head to the side, examining closer. So Kristen had a brother.... I didn't know that. I didn't know a lot of things about Kristen.

"Um... he looks..." I didn't want to hurt her feelings by insulting her brother so I said: "really handsome."

Okay. That was probably worse than telling her he looked un-picturesque. Her blond eyebrows furrowed in an irritated way, her bottom lip pulling into a pout. I handed the picture back to her.

"You know... in a big-brother sort of way..." I said, "Not nearly as pretty as you."

That might have made things even worse. Her face turn cherry red, and she looked at her feet. I sighed. Nothing I say is ever going to come out right, is it?

"Um... anyway, Aaron thinks we should start getting ready to leave..."

Kristen looked up at me as if I'd said a taboo word.

(no more first person! Yeesh! It was easier to explain everything in omnipotent POV!)

Ainsley had said the taboo word. Aaron. It wasn't like Kristen didn't like Aaron, or didn't like their friendship but...

That stupid name came out of Ainsley's mouth every five seconds.

She was beginning to think he was in love with the guy.

No, that's silly.... she told herself, Arron isn't stupid; he'd notice if Ainsley liked him.

And yet she couldn't help imagining it. It made her want to puke. For various reasons.

Ainsley was staring at her, half confused half waiting for a reply. The blond girl coughed into her fist.

"Why are we leaving?"

"We can't stay in one place for too long. It dangerous. And we are trying to get to a destination...." he smiled, "And Aaron thinks now's the best time."

There he goes again! Aaron!

"Well... I guess I should get my stuff together..."

Ugh.... I was sick yesterday... it was horrible. Vomit, pain, and weakness... I'm 98% better now, though! Just coughing up a bit of mucus! ["yeah... nobody wanted to know that...."] What did I say about shutting up, random voice?

Aaron’s POV

I slept well that night, I wasn’t sure if that was Kristen’s doing or just my lack of sleep catching up with me.



I woke up around 9am and went down stairs to find that no one else was awake.



The wood double doors to the study were still swung open and Ainsley had fallen asleep with his face on a large old book while sitting at the desk.



I really wanted to stay here at the house for a while longer but I knew that if we didn’t get moving by tomorrow, at the latest, someone would find us. I sat down on a bar stool in the kitchen, I had mentally turned all the lights off when I had gone to bed and left Ainsley with a flashlight, all the blinds were closed too just to be safe. I swiveled the stool around so that from where I sat I could see down the small hallway and into the study, I smirked as an idea came to my head. I took a mental image of everything in that room and swiveled the char back around. I focused on the lights. The lights flicked on so brightly I could see them reflecting on the marble counter. “Ha?!” I heard Ainsley say surprised. I lit the book up “What the!?”



I turned just in time to see a half asleep Ainsley fall off his chair in shock.
I snickered.



“Aaron!” He turned and saw me. I got off the bar stool and walked over into the room turning the lights back to a normal brightness as I went. I couldn't help but point my finger and laugh a little.



“Sorry.” I said still smiling and offered him my hand, he took it and smiled reluctantly as I pulled him to his feet.
“Where’s Kristen?” he asked
“Still sleeping I think.”
“Oh…” he paused then asked
“How long are we staying here?”
“I’m thinking we’ll leave tonight. That way we have time to plan exactly what we’ll need from here and where we are going, maybe we can find some kind of map here.”
Ainsley nodded “That sounds good.”
“Go see if Kristen’s asleep or not.” I said, Ainsley looked as if he were trying not to smile then went up stairs while I grabbed the serving tray and began to order some breakfast…

Kristen’s POV

I was asleep. The kind of sleep where I would have passing dreams, good and bad, but not wanting to wake up. I was not a morning person to begin with.



Anyway, the passing dreams had been about my older brother and my uncle, the two good people in my family apart from my late father. I hadn’t told anyone about my brother Matt because his story was something like mine and I had promised to tell no one. Even when mom found out that he ran away, this was four years ago he was 17 then, I had kept my promise not to tell that I had known about his plans to leave. If I had told her she would have kept me on a tighter leash and I would have never gotten away. Before he had left he told me he would wait for me at Uncle Isaac’s house in Aorth. That was why I had left I wanted to see my brother after four years… “Kristen?” someone said
“A few more minutes Matt.” I mumbled and threw a blanket at the person and went back to sleep. Then I heard the person again
“Who’s Matt?” it was Ainsley.
I sat up and rubbed my eyes, Ainsley stood in the door way looking confused holding the blanket I had thrown. “Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry I threw that at you Ainsley, I’m still half asleep…” trying not to dose off I sat up in the bed. “Who’s Matt?” he asked again now starting to look hurt. I bit my lip, I guess I had to tell him. I ran my hands threw my hair and got out of the bed, I had fallen asleep in my jeans and t-shirt so it wasn’t a big deal but Ainsley started to look uncomfortably awkward, hurt, angry and rejected all at the same time.
“Who’s Matt!?” he asked again



“My brother!” I blew up, I shouldn’t have but I did, I began to snap the rubber band I had on my wrist. Calm down. “He’s just my brother.” I said more calmly. I was not a morning person and I had always struggled with my anger, maybe that was because I had such an overbearing and nagging mother. I pulled a battered picture from my back jean pocket and gave it to Ainsley

"You're a good friend...." Ainsley broke into a smile, looking like the essence of puppies and kittens. He looked sooooo gorgeous to Kristen, it wasn't even funny. He leaned toward her, and Kristen's heart skipped a beat. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a hug.

Kristen felt the butterflies in her stomach as he held her tight, her heart beating, threatening to burst out of her chest.

"You're like a sister!" Ainsley said, a little laugh on his lips.

...Ouch.

He pulled back, smiling. Kristen looked up at him, unable to hide the hurt in her eyes. Well... it's only natural... she thought, He's only just met you....

Ainsley's smile faded. He looked concerned. "Are you okay?"

Kristen smiled again. "Y-yeah... I think I'm going to go get some fresh air."

Kristen got up, leaving Ainsley alone on the couch. He was about to go back to reading (he's been in the middle of an Artemis Fowl) when he heard a loud, annoyed "Eh-hem!"

Ainsley smiled, and turned to face Aaron, who was standing in the doorway with his arms crossed. Ainsley waved at him.

"Hey."



"Don't 'hey' me," Aaron said, laughing, "You were alone, with a girl, on a couch, and you called her your sister. I am disappointed." Aaron sat down next to Ainsley and comically wagged his finger at him.

Ainsley bit his lip, holding back laughter. "What are you talking about?"

Aaron faked exasperation. "Dude! You. Girl. Alone. Do the math."

Ainsley did laugh now. "I've just met her. I don't fall in love <i>that</i> fast."

Aaron watched as Ainsley continued to giggle like a teenage girl. He calmed down and sighed.

"You know... I'm glad I'm as stubborn as you are...." he said with a smile, "if i wasn't, I'd be back home with my mom and though that wouldn't be bad..." Aaron could see trace tears in the corners of Ainsley's eyes, "I would never have gotten to know you or even Kristen. I would never have felt quite... so..." Ainsley bit his lip and looked away from Aaron.



Aaron frowned. Ainsley parted his lips, only to close them again. His eyes shifted to Aaron and then back to the patch of floor they had taken an interest in.

"Happy," Ainsley met Aaron's eyes, relief shinning in the green. A very small smile danced on his lips, "I've never felt like I belonged before."

lol I can't wait for that scene.... It sounds funny. XD I've done something similar. I was at a con, and I found some people dressed as Louis and Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles. Of course I fangirl squealed their names. The funny thing was, they were so relived someone actually knew who they were. I was apparently the first person to recognize their costumes. The Lestat reached out a hand for me and I held out mine as if to shake it. I had a split second to change my hand position when i realized he was planning to kiss my hand, not shake it. XD

“I’m not sure what I think,” I answered vaguely “I mean why does he mask something so sad with something so beautiful?” I asked
“Well it’s not as depressing that way.” he smile I smiled back



“I guess that makes since.” I closed the book and handed it to him
“I probably shouldn't read poetry with out someone helping me.” he laugh a bit then looked up at me,



“I was going through your music player and I found a song called,” he pulled out the player and flipped through the songs then played one on speaker “Love Will Make It Certain,”

“By Mark Hildreth.” I replied looking down to avoid his searching eyes
“I didn’t know you like that kind of stuff.” He had a crooked smirk on his face and I wasn’t sure if it was because he found this funny or because he liked that song…
“I don’t… normally, but I like to listen to his stuff on occasion.” I looked at him wondering if he thought that was pathetic,



“He’s really good.” Ainsley said suddenly, the song was still playing, I looked up surprised
“You like it?” I asked
“Yeah, it’s just the right mix of blues and good acoustics.” he answered
“That’s what I think!” I was so glad he wasn’t going to pick on me for this.
Ainsley looked like he was contemplating asking me something and before I could ask what it was he said “I’m sure Aaron like’s it too” his face sort of like a sad puppy,



could he not mention Aaron for five minutes? “I guess so.” I said not really knowing what to say. “You and he will be good together.” Ainsley said then went to get up but I pulled him back to look at me. “Ainsley,” I said trying to hold back my laughter “I don’t like Aaron.” he looked stunned



“You- you don’t?” he stuttered
“No I don’t. And he doesn’t like me in that way.” I reiterated “I’m not interested in him, I-” I cut myself off, I had just met Ainsley the other day I wasn’t sure how he’d react if I said ‘Hey I know we’ve only known each other for about a day now but I feel like you and I are connected and hey guess what I like you’ even though I really did want to say something like that. Ainsley smiled and said…
